Vintage Loom Spirit Shuttles
Greetings and welcome to Spirit Shuttle where we offer a unique and original collection of spiritual art. Developed by Leif Joslyn, the theme revolves around loom shuttles, real loom shuttles, lovely hand-carved wood artifacts from Southeast Asia.
These have been combined with various styles of spiritual art and put on stands or with hangers for display in the home or alter. The slender design allow the Spirit Shuttle to fit in a great variety of places.
Taking up as little as two inches of wall space, everybody has room for a Spirit Shuttle!
Looking at the Spirit Shuttle
When not looked at directly the Spirit Shuttle is small and innocuous. Once noticed they can stun and captivate a person with their depth, grace and symbolism.
Touching the Spirit Shuttle
People like to touch and even hold these artifacts. There is something quite special about the feeling of these loom shuttles. Having been handled for many hours or even years by weavers once upon a time, one might wonder if perhaps some residue of soul was left behind in them.
The sleek design that allows the shuttle to function as a hand-held tool naturally invites others who have hands to sense and rediscover the elegance of their shape. Like beads on a string, or a smooth worry stone, they can offer tactile solace in times of anxiety or stress.
Talking about the Spirit Shuttle
The conversation often starts with the loom shuttle, which is a largely forgotten artifact that times past was familiar to most everyone. Today, with most textiles made by machines, many people simply have no idea what this artifact really is. "It looks like a boat" people often comment at first. And that is a good answer; these are also known as "boat shuttles". (Click here, for more on looms, hand weaving and shuttles.)
Then the discussion may focus on the subject of the spiritual art set in the bobbin chamber. Whether it is a replica of an ancient Buddha, a Hindu god, or some Christian art, all are meant to be deeply evocative of the human condition, we frail creature beings lodged between heaven and earth. Thus, the sky is indeed the limit of where the talk may go.
Meditation on the Spirit Shuttle
I do not want do be presumptuous about the carrying power, or transformative potential, of any particular object. But we know at the right place and time, even a very small object can offer great inspiration or bolster one's fortitude. If a feather floats into a prison cell will not the man inside contemplate it for many an hour? It is my belief that the real force is found within the person, whether they are looking at feather, a stone cross, or a stick of wood.
However, the question may arise, where is the separation? Were those same elements ever part of my ancestors? Thus it can begin and return, while in peaceful stillness or deep contemplation.
The Purpose
The purpose of the Spirit Shuttle is simply to add a little beauty to your home or alter. They are, after all, at this stage just art. However, if these pretty little designs somehow spark in you an energy, it could be soothing or it could be crackling, let this remind you of the great mystery that surrounds the pageant of life, and that you too are part of a wonderful miracle. Let spirit carry you.
Yours truly,
Leif Joslyn
